How do reusable hand warmers work?
Unlike disposable hand warmers, these hand warmers are reusable. They are small plastic pouches with a transparent liquid and a small metal disc inside. To release the heat, flex the metal disc. Hey, presto! The liquid will turn into crystals that give off heat. The heat lasts about 45 minutes, or longer if you have it in your pocket. To reset the hand warmer, boil it in water for about 10 minutes, until the crystals turn back into liquid. You can boil several at a time.
How does the hand warmer work? The liquid in the pouch is made up of water and sodium acetate. When you flex the small disk, it releases tiny pieces of metal. These agitate the sodium acetate, an amazing chemical, causing a chain reaction. The sodium acetate turns into crystals that release the stored thermal energy. It will heat up to 54°C! You can reverse the process by boiling the pouch until the liquid is clear again.
Where can you use the hand warmers?
These reusable hand warmers are perfect for protecting yourself from the cold during the winter. Numb hands are not to be taken lightly! Keep one in every pocket of your jacket. Cold hands can also aggravate arthritis pain, so keeping your hands warm will help. Many people use hand warmers when they are doing outdoor activities. Of course, you will need to be able to put your hands in your pocket at least some of the time. So skiing might not be a good use for them!
